ParaVR
A virtual reality system for training paramedics.

ParaVR explored how virtual reality could help paramedics maintain skills in procedures that are essential but rarely performed. Working with the Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust, the project identified needle cricothyrotomy and needle thoracostomy as suitable procedures for the training simulator.
The prototype combined an Oculus Rift headset with a Novint Falcon haptic device, providing physical feedback as the user interacted with the virtual patient. The training environment was also adapted for the Oculus Go and Google Cardboard to investigate more portable and accessible ways to deliver the experience.
The published work describes the requirements, prototype development and refinement of ParaVR. It presents the system as an early step towards a scalable tool for paramedic skills development and maintenance, rather than as a completed clinical evaluation.
